Did you know that your makeup brushes contain bacteria that could make skin problems like blemishes and acne a lot worse? Even if you have a great skincare routine, dirty makeup brushes increases the likelihood of breakouts and spots. This is why it’s so important to keep your makeup brushes clean. Below we’ve provided a 6 step cleaning process that you should follow when washing your makeup brushes. We would recommend that you complete this method at least once every fortnight to avoid those irritating skin problems arising or becoming worse.

1. Wet The Fibres

Hold the brush downwards and wet the fibres with lukewarm water. Try not to hold the makeup brush upwards as this can cause water to get into the ferrule and loosen the glue that holds the fibres of the brush to the handle.

2. Apply Lather

Use a small amount of makeup cleanser or shampoo, apply it into the fibres and gently massage the brush into the palm of your hands to wash out the makeup. Don’t be too harsh as this can damage the shape of the brush tip.

3. Rinse With Lukwarm Water

Rinse the makeup brush with lukewarm water until the soap and makeup has been washed out completely. If the brush still appears to be dirty then simply repeat steps 2 & 3 until the water runs clear.

4. Reshape The Fibres

Squeeze the brush with your hand to ensure that the majority of the water has been removed. You don’t want to ‘ring out’ the fibres as this can damage it. Reshape the fibres of your damp brush into the same form they were before washing it.

5. Dry Overnight

Lay the makeup brush on a towel and leave it to dry overnight. If possible, allow the tip of the brush to hang over the edge of a counter so it can retain it’s natural shape and dry faster (densely packed fibres will take longer to dry). If during washing, the ferrule or handle becomes wet, take a towel and dry it immediately.

6. Use As Normal

When you wake up check the centre of the makeup brush to make sure that it has dried all the way through. It is now ready to use as normal.

  1. I use a bar of Ivory soap since it’s a mild soap. It cleans my brushes and beauty blender pretty good. I also use one of those rubber/silicone jar openers to scrub my brushes on for a deep cleaning. The little nubbies on it work good for that.
