Tidal is a recently launched music streaming service purchased by Jay Z for $56 million dollars. According to the rapper, Tidal is a breakthrough to the music industries in which he seeks to have a clear solution to problems facing musicians in streaming age. “Tidal is here as an alternative” to bring a change to the streaming industry.
What makes Tidal different is that it’s owned by music artists, including the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce, Coldplay, Nicki Minaj, Maddona, Kanye West, Jack White, Alicia Keys and more. Being owned by artists means that the service will bring financial benefits to those involved, unlike the pennies paid by current streaming services like Spotify. It is also a powerful symbol to business where musicians will have direct control over what they produce in the music industry.
The new music streaming service will only be available by subscription, with charges ranging from $10 to $19.99. Unlike Spotify, Tidal will have no free subscription package, but does promise to pay double the standard streaming royalties on streams from customers on the premium ($19.99) plan as well as providing access to higher quality audio files. Jay Z hopes that this new service will allow everyone to have respect for music and the artists again.
Rihanna and Beyonce have already launched new songs exclusively on Tidal. Beyonce released ‘Die For You’, whilst Rihanna released ‘American Oxygen‘.
